Grotjahn is perhaps best known for his distinctive series of "Butterfly" paintings, where the central form of the butterfly, with its symmetrical wings, is fragmented and reconfigured through complex patterns of vibrant color and intricate lines. The series, which plays with optical illusions, creates an intense emotional resonance, drawing the viewer in as they experience both the precision and spontaneity in Grotjahn’s work. These pieces, full of movement and depth, capture the viewer’s attention, evoking feelings of awe and wonder as they become lost in the hypnotic quality of the shapes and colors.

Another significant body of work includes his "Perspective" paintings, in which he explores the geometry of space and perception through sharply defined lines and bold color contrasts. By challenging traditional perspective, Grotjahn compels the viewer to reconsider their understanding of visual space, creating an emotional experience that oscillates between clarity and ambiguity.
