One of Stingel’s most famous works is Untitled (2001), a large-scale installation that features a room covered entirely in plush carpeting. This immersive environment invites viewers to engage physically with the space, challenging their perception of what constitutes art and inviting them to consider the relationship between the art object and its surroundings. Stingel is also known for his paintings, in which he often uses unconventional methods and materials. In his Self-Portrait series (2006), he employed a process of erasing the surface of the canvas to reveal an underlying image, giving the impression of a fading, ephemeral presence that evokes themes of memory and mortality.

Stingel’s work is emotionally moving in its capacity to create a space for contemplation and transformation. By breaking down the traditional divisions between art, artist, and viewer, he elicits a powerful sense of interaction and engagement with his pieces. His works challenge the viewer to confront not only the visual experience but also the complex emotional responses that arise from these encounters.
